Do You Want to Create a Great Personal Brand in Your Workplace?
Written on the 27 January 2015 by Rachel Quilty, Personal Brand Strategist @ Jump the Q
Recently I was interviewed on the importance of branding in the workplace. It was great to chat to John Stanley on Sydney 2UE & Brisbane 4BC about the importance of your personal brand and creating a signature look within your industry.
While we had a chuckle about some of the more memorable looks that prominent Australians had achieved such as Prime Minister Hawke's Australia jacket that he wore the day Australia won the American Cup; the lesson cannot be overlooked, Bob Hawke embedded his charismatic character deeply into hearts and minds of Australians to become on the most beloved PM's in our history.
Bob Hawke's personal brand was clearly on display and he reflected the spirit of many Australians. He was extremely intelligent, cared enough to take the fighting arena of politics but was happy to have a joke, a laugh and a beer.
Interestingly, on arrival in America in 1962 Sir Frank Packer was asked what made him think he could challenge for the Americas Cup. Sir Frank said, "Our fighting spirit and delusions of grandeur."
Strategically and intentionally creating our personal branding is a lot like that; it takes a fighting spirit and some delusions of grandeur to create a brand that reflects your future potential and defines you have great worth and are prepared to fight for your place in history.
It's easy to sit on the sidelines, to hide in the shadows and to never enter the competition.
As Marianne Williams wrote, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."
But is takes courage to step into the light; to enter the arena; to back yourself.
Creating a personal brand in your workplace requires you to consider your strategic style and how well your professional look, attitude, performance and behaviour reflects your potential. Engineer www.YourOwnSignatureLook.com today men! Often people will express concern that you can't control how other perceives you but you can. An interesting fact is that within seconds people decide whether they like us, trust us and want to spend time with us and more importantly do business with us. You are in complete control of your first impression, your signature style, your work ethic and your work performance. Hence you are more in control of others perceptions than you think.
Can you create a powerful personal brand? Can you create a strategic style that creates credibility and authority? Of course! One of the best resources I offer my clients to create their strategic style is the latest online style program. My male clients are often reluctant to dabble but quickly become devotees when they start getting compliments and lots other good stuff from their partners who can't believe how great they look. Is it your turn in the arena? To show others what you're made of?
Ladies, I know you know so head over the www.YourOwnSignatureStyle.com for the female version and tell me what you think. Alternatively, if your relationship has crashed and burned, it's time to add a little sizzle to your style and flaunt a great new you in the workplace. Let people know you're not done ... not by a long shot!
