Each Friday, journalist Amy Wallin interviews Personal Brand Strategist and Celebrity Media Commentator, Rachel Quilty from Jump the Q about the celebrity brands making news that week. Rachel Quilty reveals how celebrities are making or breaking their personal brand and how we can learn from their experiences to build a celebrity personal brand.
A sense of style cannot be taken for granted. We saw the best and worst dressed at the 2012 Oscars, but as usual the media are more interested in the bodies of celebrities rather than their stunning or not so stunning outfits. Angelina Jolie is the prime target for anorexia concern, despite if she is one of the busiest women in the world. Stress is apparently, no excuse for a Hollywood star to look anything less than perfect.
Jolie’s stylist Jen Rade in an attempt to camouflage Jolie’s extreme weight loss selected probably a dress that added volume to her super slim frame. Jolie is quoted as saying that feeling swamped in her gown she was forced to strike a pose to break up the gowns extra proportions.
Angelina looked stunning. Neither anticipated that Jolie’s pose would be mocked by another Oscar recipient, causing a worldwide viral sensation mocking the pose. Jolie is supposedly, humiliated.
Personal branding expert, Rachel Quilty says, “You are your own number one asset. Mastering, your personal style is a reflection on how well you can handle other areas of your life. At the Oscar’s, Angelina was, by all accounts, the picture of an A-list celebrity. She emitted a calm confidence in a black velvet dress, with red lips and a seductive smile.
While Angelina’s personal style is generally understated and elegant. The pose, and dramatic thigh reveal became distracting because it was not Angelina’s usual style. In effect she moved away from her brand attributes.
However, she is alarmingly thin, her stylist had the foresight to dress her in a gown that gave her some volume, her hair covered her colour bones, and the dress adds weight to her body without drowning her. While it may not be as momentous if your body weight isn’t its best, it is recommended to know how dress for your body shape. Every celebrity quickly learns how to highlight your assets, underplay your faults and maintain your personal sense of style. “
The Oscar’s also teach us how easy it is to go wrong, you can never ever take for granted your personal style. By not paying attention to your body type, personality, creating a distraction from your normal style or the overall impression you want people to believe, you can easily make faux pas and go viral. Angelina’s wise decision to not wear a figure hugging gown or something that hangs off her or overpowers her small frame made her the belle of the ball. She looked in control; she didn’t appear stressed or malnourished. While striking that pose was off brand and quickly noticed.
Your personal sense of style should reflect yourself. From Angelina we learn that how we dress and how we present ourselves in a professional or personal environment influences how we wish to be perceived. To create a smart image, your wardrobe should be modern; you should also know what colours suit you and know what styles flatter you.
