Media Release - Personal Brand Delta Goodrem - Leverages an Opportunity
Written on the 12 May 2011 by Rachel Quilty, Personal Brand Strategist @ Jump the Q
Personal Brand Strategist, Rachel Quilty of Personal Brand Consulting firm, Jump the Q provides the following on the tremendous success of Delta Goodrem as a personal brand in the USA after her Dancing with the Stars performance.
Delta Goodrem – Leverages an Opportunity to Take US by Storm
Delta Goodrem last night wowed American viewers on Dancing with the Stars when she agreed to replace UK singer Adele at the 11th hour. Goodrem stepped in with less than an hour to rehearse the song A Natural Woman, by Carole Kin and made famouse by Aretha Franklin.
Delta sang her heart out in front of the 21 million US viewers who tune into DWTS. Goodrem also performed her new duet with Michael Bolton, I’m Not Ready. The song, which features on Bolton's new duets album, Gem releasing in Australia on 23 June.
Recently returning from LA my husband and I ran into Delta Goodrem in the Virgin VIP Lounge. Delta Goodrem has a fantastic personal brand and is a terrific ambassador for Australia. She was warm and interested in our travels.
But Delta dropped her signature casual style with fedora, as seen here in a photo with my husband, appearing on DWTS wearing a gorgeous dress made by Australian designer Lisa Ho.
Sometimes people fail to realize that a great personal brand does not drive circumstances, as much as circumstances create opportunity for great brands to emerge. Consider the personal brands of Winston Churchill, Paris Hilton, and New York City Mayor Rudolph “Rudy” Giuliani.
In Jump the Q’s principles of positioning yourself as the AUTHORITY in your industry, “O” is identified as Opportunity , within the AUTHORITY acronym.
Great personal brands step up to opportunity. And this is exactly what Delta did …
Find Opportunities
Opportunity is afforded to those who take a leadership role in the personal brand development. Many people are provided opportunities which they don’t take advantage of. Taking advantage of an opportunity can be as simple as returning a phone call, creating an article when requested, providing a gift voucher or responding promptly to emails.
In an interview with Julia Roberts of Pretty Woman fame, Oprah said of Julia’s comment on being lucky, that “Luck [or success] is when opportunity meets preparation.”
Determine that you want to be the best in your field. What are the best in your field doing better than you or that you are not doing?
Identify what opportunities may be being afforded to others and make similar plans to create opportunities elsewhere.
Delta has created a storm of media and social media buzz, successfully allowing her to leverage the opportunity presented when Adele couldn’t go on. Great personal brands enjoy the power of the pull. Pull is when your reputation precedes you to the point that others seek you out and pull you forward. With a great personal brand opportunity finds you.
Beware of Treadmill Behavior
Beware of engaging in treadmill behavior that prevents you from proactively seeking out and taking advantage of opportunities. At the end of the day, we are responsible for our own results.
Ask yourself:
• Why haven’t I already taken advantage of existing opportunities?
• Why aren’t I creating opportunities?
The objective of personal branding is to become the “only choice” brand of choice, the recognized leader and authority within your industry. Leadership is independent of formal positions. No one gives you power, you just assume it.
Generally, we cannot buy or pester our way into the highest circles or incredible opportunities – we have to be invited. However, more importantly when we are invited we better have something special to offer.
And Delta Goodrem did on DWTS … Delta was herald the Savior of the Show. When an Act fails to perform in front of an audience of 21 million, TV Executives have every right to be high strung. Delta moved to capitalise on the opportunity, singing Carole King's Natural Woman, saving the day.
Conversely, Adele the UK singing is said to be disappointed to have given up her slot on the most popular show on US TV. No doubt, her no show performance will have an incredible impact on her personal brand.
Remember, your goal is not attention but glory. Glory is fame with honor. Being famous is not hard. Becoming famous for the right reasons is a little more challenging.
Be like Delta… Start today and:
• think like the industry leader or an heiress
• take the opportunity to take a lead role
• take advantage of opportunities, say yes and then figure it out
• think like a marketer and tap into trends
• create your own opportunities
Master the art of connection. Get involved. Being everywhere brings great opportunities. Don’t wait to start connecting and promoting yourself and your personal brand. Perfectionism will sabotage you.
