Case Study: Mel B - Weighty Issues For Your Personal Brand
Written on the 13 March 2012 by Journalist Amy Wallin, Interviews Rache Quilty @ Jump the Q
Mel B and weight loss always seems to be in the same sentence these days. Her strategic alliance with weight loss company Jenny Craig has really helped both brands revive their flagging spirits.
Adding a few pounds can make us all a little low. Maybe we neglected our health; we’re just so busy at work. Maybe we are stuck in a rut. Or maybe the weight just crept on over time.
And no doubt with every pregnancy comes pressure to lose your baby weight gain as soon as possible, particularly if you‘re a celebrity.
The Mel B brand is all about confidence, scary confidence. She is sure to make an impression with bold outfits and the personality to match. How would you go about branding yourself Mel B when you’re over weight? It is all about keeping your style consistent despite weight fluctuations. This is made a lot easier if you understand your body shape, the style that flatter and how you might camouflage your challenges.
Journalist, Amy Wallin, posed the question of weight and personal branding to Jump the Q’s personal branding expert, Rachel Quilty, the authority on everything from image management to A-list attitude. Rachel advised, “Dressing for success means dressing in a manner that reflects your authentic self in a way that attracts your target audience,” she said. “You need to establish a signature style that’s memorable. For the right reasons, of course! Perceptions, image and reputation are an output of your primary impression producer: your personal style.”
Enter Mel B. She walks into a room and whether it’s the projecting confident voice or the bold, sassy outfits; she has the crowd’s attention. Mel B invests in bold colours that suit her complexion, hair and eye colour, rarely patterns (unless its animal print) or pastels. Her personal style depends on looking good no matter the weight. When she has a few extra kilo’s, Mel tends to follow the planes of the body rather than the curves, she also uses the clever technique of illusion dressing. Using black and white to give the impression of being thinner or creating ‘new’ curves with colour blocking techniques.
Mel B, like any celebrity, has slimming secrets of her own, though admitted to being far too busy to organise it herself after her third baby and insisted her success was due to Jenny Craig. “To most people it didn’t look like much but to me, boy, I felt like another person.” Weight loss for Mel B was about more than looking good, it gained her confidence back. Feeling healthy and strong gives you the edge in business and personal life to persevere through obstacles to be successful
We learn from Mel B, the importance of matching your sense of style to your personality, although even celebrities make mistakes. Whenever Mel B steps outside of her realm, wearing dresses a little too tight fitting for her current body weight, whenever she wears something a little too feminine, the media and her audience have difficulty connecting with her. The brand image is not consistent and the audience cannot see the connection with the daring personality to an outfit that is more suited for 21 year old Mel than the fierce mother of three Mel.
