Our world is often frantic and bordering on overwhelm as we juggle to achieve the perfect ‘balance’. Work, exercise, shopping, time with family and friends and just life in general, is a lot of balls to be juggling.
When recently questioning the calm order of a Professional Organisers life, I was told the answer was ‘outsourcing’. No – you can’t out source time with family and friends.
Determining what is an ineffective use of your previous time, is however a valuable use of 15 minutes.
‘I hate shopping’, ‘ I spend hours searching through the stores and find nothing’, ‘ I wasted a whole day and went home empty handed.’ is something we hear alot.
We’ll let you in on a secret. Generally, Stylists and Personal Shopper spend very little time in stores on their personal shopping. When we shop we are on a ‘mission’ – one hour, two at most.
Seven Personal Stylist secrets you need to know when shopping:
-A quick glance in a store can determine if they are stocking you best personal colours. Always select items in your best colours or know how to break the rules.
-A quick wardrobe audit can help identify gaps. These are the pieces that you are looking for. A new season blouse will extend the wear of a pencil skirt. The latest dress has weekend outings covered.
-Knowing what works with your body shape will allow you to quickly discount styles which are unflattering.
-Identify what trends are coming and are here to stay. Trench coats, maxi dresses, shirt dresses have been on the horizon for 12- 18mths. A clever shopper purchased them last year on sale.
-Never work too many trends or designers at the one time. Pick keys pieces to incorporate into your wardrobe.
-Understand the slimming or emphasising effect garment focal points and design lines can have on your overall look.
-A well co-ordinated look will always win positive comment. Know your best colours helps as you can buy in shades in that colour and co-ordination becomes a snap.
Personal stylists also know which stores support different body shapes. If you have a curvy figure, shopping in stores that cater to petite or tall slim body shapes is wasting your time.
Looking stylish, is simply knowing where to shop for your colouring and body shape.
