As the dark hues of winter are replaced by the brilliance of nature's spring, our wardrobes should also be reflecting Mother Nature. Successfully storing your winter clothes will mean a hassle free start to your next winter season as well as preparing your wardrobeyou're your dazzling spring and summer wear. Here are ten tips to help you successfully swap your wardrobe over from winter to spring/summer.
- Collect all your winter clothes and place them together in one place so you can see how many items you have. This will also help you work out the style and number of storage containers you will need.
- Look through each item of clothing and ask yourself, "Does this bring out the best in me?" If the answer is no, give away or toss immediately. Keep only clothes that support you in style, colour and fabric. If you are unsure, ask an honest friend or hire an Image Consultant. See www.jumptheq.com.au for more details.
- Empty the pockets of each item of clothing and check for rips, tears, and stains. Remove any jewellery such as brochures or pins.
- Clean or dry clean those items that have been worn. This will ensure that all stains are removed including hidden ones such as perspiration and perfume.
- Remember to remove the dry cleaners plastic to allow the fabric to breathe and avoid the plastic creating mildew or mould on your precious clothes. Instead cover clothes with fabric garment bags. As an alternative, wrap a clean sheet around your clothes.
- Fold your sweaters and any special garments such as sequined blouses or sweaters using acid-neutral tissue paper. Store them flat and away from dust and light.
- Pack your clothes in a dry, cool, and dark location. If you do not have the luxury of a spare wardrobe, then consider investing in quality storage containers that can roll under your bed or be stored on a high shelf. If you have suits or coats that are not suitable for folding, have you considered purchasing a portable hanging wardrobe with a fabric cover and placing in an out of the way location? Or perhaps the Vestby wardrobe from IKEA for $75.
- Use an insect repellent such as camphor or natural products such as cedar. Herbs such as lavender and rosemary, offer some protection against the clothes moth. Avoid moth balls as it takes a while to get rid of the smell come next winter.
- Throw those wire hangers out now! They are your clothes worst enemy as they do dreadful things to shoulders. Use wide, shaped plastic or wood hangers instead.
- Enjoy a glass of your favourite beverage and celebrate being so organised you are ready for next winter.
